Once an important lead-mining area the village now hosts an interesting display of former life in the settlement in the Allenheads Heritage Centre. Surrounded by beautiful heather-clad moorland, the area is well known amongst walkers, nature lovers and bird watchers. In addition to the town's own heritage centre, the Beamish Open Air Museum is nearby â€“ showing a recreation of a mining community. Other attractions within easy driving distance include the fascinating city of Durham, Hadrian's Wall and the attractive market towns of Allendale, Alston and Hexham. With so much to see and do, one visit isn't likely to be enough!
